Pillar Point Lighthouse and Cape Farewell

Pillar Point Lighthouse

There is a vigorous 30 minute walk to this exposed coastal high point from the road at Wharariki Saddle. It is the site of New Zealand's first radar station and provides great views over the starkly bare hills nearby, with the immense sweep of Farewell Spit to the east and the smooth green farmland of Wharariki to the west.

Cape Farewell

Also signposted from the Wharariki road is Cape Farewell, the northern most point of the South Island. A few minute's easy walk from the carpark takes you to an impressive cliff top lookout with expansive sea and coastal views.
