Waitapu Wharf
Waitapu Wharf, where fishing
and scallop boats now
supply the processing factory, was originally established to load
out timber from East Takaka to trading vessels bound for Wellington
and Wanganui. A tramway ran out over the mud flats on a long straight
causeway. This wharf then played an important role in establishing
the township of Takaka. On the way, now
just off the main road, is the historical and protected River Inn
- one of the early hostelries of the area but still offering hospitality.
